Daylighting Analysis and Modelling
Carefully sized and positioned glazing reduces the need for artificial lighting and creates a better environment to live and work in.
We use daylight modelling software to assess a building in detail, together with the effect of neighbouring buildings and obstructions. We can also evaluate the important balance between higher levels of natural daylight in buildings against the additional heating/cooling requirement in spaces with large areas of glazing.
We are also qualified to provide the required reports and calculations to fulfill BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes (Hea 1) assessments. These simulations can be run in conjunction with BREEAM Energy analysis to ensure your building achieves the most cost effective BREEAM solution.
Sunlight Modelling
Managing the effects of the sun is a feature of good building design.
Solar modelling enables us to understand and control the geometric relationship between the sun and buildings. We use SunCast modelling to assist with planning applications, to perform graphical and numerical solar studies, minimise solar glare, assess the impact of effective shading and solar penetration, optimise building position and orientation and minimise cooling plant or heating requirements.
Planning Issues
Many planning authorities now require light issues to be addressed as part of a planning application. We provide the required evidence and reports showing if neighbouring properties are adversely affected by a new development, extension or wall to assist with gaining planning approval. This can also be useful to assess the maximum envelope area of a new development to ensure it falls within allowable parameters. Please click here for further information.
Right of Light
We are also Right to Light Surveyors and act on behalf of developers or neighbours in disputes of light issues.
Because we are specialists in this complex area we are able to assess the size of a light ‘injury’ and to quantify its value for compensation purposes. As this is generally settled out of Court we can also carry out the negotiations for our clients with the back up of our detailed analysis of the extent of the light loss.
